Business Plans – are they a waste of time?

Many people look to create a business plan when they are just starting out, usually this consists of fantasy numbers and figures that people make up in their mind in order to boost their ego, the truth of the matter is that most of these business plans are irrelevant, at some point in time if you want to be a success you have to move with the flow of what the market wants, this should be your key concern, you are not here to create turnover or get venture capital funding for an idea that simply won’t work no matter how many hours you put into it, the key thing you must do is decide early on to find out what the market actually wants to buy, by doing this you have a greater chance of success and your business plan will be constantly changing.

The key to being a great business is adaptation, if you can’t adapt quickly to what people want then you are going to be left behind as your competition will create new products and you will still be trying to sell the same only stuff only to realise that you sales are tanking and the company is loosing money, this is why business plans should be less than one page long and be editable, it’s great that you have a plan but what if your idea becomes obsolete in a few years, you need to be able to adapt with the times, especially if you are in the technology sector, this is a fast paced industry where something can be launched and then 2 years later you need to upgrade.

One of the best ways to keep adapting is always have customer feedback points in your business, if you can’t set up a system for this then you need to start talking to your customers and find out what there hot buttons are then transforming that into something they want to buy, it’s a really simple concept but it’s the basic research that’s needed in order to create a successful business that will thrive.
